Reggie Fils-Aime has been a busy guy in retirement. The former President of Nintendo of America has written a book and serves on several advisory boards.
Of course, his love of games has not gone away, and Reggie enjoys talking about them whenever he gets this chance. This includes a recent sit-down interview with Christopher Dring of The Game Business.
Over roughly 45 minutes, the two touched on a variety of topics, including the success of the Nintendo Switch 2. Perhaps the biggest topic, though, is the current state of the industry, notably how things are headed to unprecedented times.
GameStop recently joked on social media that the console war was over following the news that Halo: Campaign Evolved was coming to PlayStation. It’s something that Reggie confirms: the console wars are over, especially since he recognizes that the Xbox brand is «a big third-party publisher that also makes some hardware.» Because of this, he views them as someone who is no longer competing directly with Sony and the PlayStation brand.
Reggie feels that Microsoft needs to take the extra step and bring its games not just to the PlayStation platform, but also to the Nintendo Switch.
Dring calls back to when the «console wars» were at their peak during the PS3/Xbox 360 days, pointing out how the two companies used competition to breed innovation, especially given the success of the Nintendo Wii and its motion controls, which were famously later adapted by both Sony and Microsoft. He fears that with Xbox pulling away and Nintendo content to do its own thing, we will eventually see a stale market. It’s something Reggie agrees with wholeheartedly.
«I do believe that competition results in innovation and benefits for the consumer. I’ve seen it across too many industries to not believe that it’s true. And so I do hope that this industry doesn’t stagnate. There are at times signs that the innovation isn’t there, the breakthrough new type of content seems to be a little bit further and far between. So, you know, that concerns me, and I hope that doesn’t stop.»
Reggie Fils-Aime Would Love To See Nintendo Assist Third-Party Developers In Efficiency

With the «console wars» officially over (sorry, I don’t make the rules), it seems like the right time for these former competitors to work hand in hand. Given that we now live in a world where Master Chief is coming to Sony PlayStation, anything is possible, right?
One area that could come into play is Nintendo’s assistance to third-party developers working on the Nintendo Switch 2. Reggie mentions how impressive he is with Nintendo and how efficient they were with their games. Take, for example, Tears of the Kingdom, a massive game whose file size is, according to Reggie, roughly half of what other developers have.
Given the increased focus on third-party support on the Nintendo Switch 2, headlined by Capcom’s Resident Evil: Requiem launching the same day as PS5 and Xbox, there’s a definite opening here for other third-party devs to take advantage.
«That efficiency is what [Nintendo] needs to share with third-party developers so that their best content…could make its way onto Switch 2 and be quite successful.» With games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut seeing success on the Switch 2, there’s a definite opening for other third-party developers to see that same success. Ironically, Microsoft doesn’t appear to be one of them, leading to both Reggie and Dring being surprised that Microsoft and Xbox aren’t fully embracing the Switch 2. They’re both shocked that the announcement of Halo: Campaign Evolved didn’t come with a Nintendo Switch 2 version as well. While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 and Indiana Jones are coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, other major titles, such as Forza Horizon 5 (released for the PS5 this year), seem to be missing in action.
Maybe it’s just a case of Nintendo being Nintendo and wanting to announce things on their terms? It’s possible that, as Xbox is looking to embrace handheld devices, it sees Nintendo as a competitor. Either way, it’s puzzling.
