Although I love the Metroidvania genre and have enjoyed practically everything I’ve played within it, I can understand the reasons of those who don’t share the same passion.
One of the most common criticisms I see is that the emphatic progression system leads to slow beginnings, with mechanics divided, so the player can discover everything gradually, which prevents people from feeling motivated to keep playing.
While this has never happened to me, as I like the genre’s gradual style, I see the burden of having to endure many hours of relative boredom before truly enjoying the game. However, let me tell you, that’s not always the case.
On the contrary, there are many titles in this genre that very persistently hook you from the first moment and only get better as you progress. From these, I’ve selected several to create this list of ten Metroidvanias that are instantly fun.
10 Дандара
A Fresh Concept

Since I’ve recently been focused on trying out video games beyond the typical popular spheres, I eventually stumbled upon Дандара, a 2D indie platformer that will blow you away from the start.
Unlike the vast majority of Metroidvanias, where free and dynamic movement is key, this game takes the opposite approach, stopping you from moving freely and, instead, having you bounce off walls on certain specific platforms, giving it a much more tactical and deliberate feel.
I won’t deny it can get slow for impatient players at times, but the beginning is amazing simply because of offering such a novel and interesting concept, which is kept alive thanks to the genre’s natural progression and a world rich in mythology.
It’s not the first Metroidvania I’d recommend, but it’s one I’d encourage you to play if you’re tired of living the same experiences within the genre or if you want to be sure you’re hooked from the first moment.
9 SteamWorld раскопки
Digging is Mesmerizing

Resource management and the ability to modify almost the entire map are a combination of mechanics you might think came from Minecraft or Terraria, but in this case, I’m actually talking about the great SteamWorld Dig.
The game does an excellent job of quickly introducing you to the core gameplay, familiarizing you with its experience immediately, so you always know what you have to do and why.
Although it might seem minor, the interface also contributes to this feeling, with colorful and permanent indicators that emphasize the importance of collecting everything you come across and improving your abilities to do so, which inevitably involves upgrades that help you move more comfortably across the earth.
Furthermore, the characters in SteamWorld Dig are charming, and you genuinely feel motivated to interact with them as much as possible, which I’d say is quite unusual in a genre where loneliness in ruined worlds is the norm.
These aspects may seem irrelevant to most people, but even if they don’t realize it, they are the kind of things that help make the start of a journey much less burdensome and more focused, so don’t underestimate them.

Speaking of games where you dig into the Earth’s core, Эвердип Аврора has been one of my biggest surprises of 2025 thanks to its charming post-apocalyptic proposal.
I don’t know if it’s the gorgeous pixel art, the hilarious dialogue with each character, the sense of adventure, or the fact that the protagonist is a cat, but it didn’t take me even 10 minutes to feel completely engrossed in its world.
Эвердип Аврора has a classic vibe that, from the mechanics to the presentation, naturally encourages you to explore and experiment, searching for all the secrets behind every block and fully enjoying every step forward, making you feel like a child again playing a game from the Game Boy Color.
Given it’s a shorter experience, with less content and more focused on making its few hours memorable, it’s a fleeting title that quickly leaves its mark, as it knows it has little time to win you over and strives accordingly.
7 Лайка: Старение через кровь
Between Gunshots and Motorcycles

The typical Metroidvania is a medieval fantasy melee game, and honestly, I’m not complaining: it’s literally my favorite mixture. However, a change of pace is always welcome, and that’s where Laika: Aged Through Blood приходит дюйма
Not only because of its excessively visceral tone, being much bloodier and telling a more brutal story than most of its contemporaries, but also because of the combination of a Испытания-style motorcycle game with a Metroidvania structure.
The result is a high difficulty level for reasons other than the usual ones, since the mere act of knowing how to ride a motorcycle, turn at the right moment to protect yourself from bullets and reload your weapon, aim at enemies, and not fall over yourself at the same time is quite complex.
Still, I know the reason many of us like this genre is precisely because of the thrill of overcoming new challenges and learning to control a set of mechanics to the fullest, so the previous paragraph is more of an added incentive for you to play Laika: Aged Through Blood.
6 Принц Персии: Утраченная корона
Ubisoft в лучшем виде

If you’re like me and start playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown expecting to see the same old thing Ubisoft has been doing for the last 10 years, you’re in for a massive surprise.
First, you’re treated to two minutes of some of the most glorious cinematic art you’ve seen in the last decade, with transitions worthy of a blockbuster anime, and then you’re thrown into a war where you realize the mechanics are spectacular and polished to perfection.
Before the first ten minutes of gameplay are over, you’ll be fighting a general on a giant horse, and before you’ve even reached the half-hour mark, the nation’s prince will have been kidnapped, so getting bored is simply not an option.
The situation is such that, if I could ask the French company for one wish, it would be that they take what they learned with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and replicate it ad nauseam with all their other franchises, because it is the perfect example of how to make a spin-off that works even better than your big releases.
5 Эндер Лилий: Квайетус Рыцарей
Collecting Invocations

Although I’d never dare call Эндер Лилии: Квайетус из рыцарей a Покемон spin-off, much of its appeal certainly lies in the same concept: collecting creatures to fight for you.
Yet, in this beautiful Metroidvania, you do have to dodge, run, jump, and do all the usual genre moves, while having an incredible combination of melee, ranged, support, and utility summons at your disposal to aid you on your journey, which is fantastic.
В этом смысле, knowing each boss you defeat will be added to your arsenal of minions is brilliantly powerful, as it adds another layer to each battle and makes every fight feel more significant, starting with the very first one.
Trying out different combinations, using their unique abilities to access previously inaccessible areas, becoming attached to their heartbreaking backstories that will evoke immeasurable empathy… Whether it’s for fighting, moving around, or simply feeling connected to the characters, the game knows how to connect with you with masterful ease.
If the idea of gathering forces from beyond to save the kingdom of Land’s End while listening to one of the best soundtracks in video game history and witnessing the saddest story ever conceived doesn’t appeal to you, then I can’t think of anything else to say to recommend Ender Lilies.
4 Ори и воля огоньков
Красивое путешествие

Когда я играл Ори и слепой лес, I was somewhat disappointed because, despite being a beautiful game, it fell short mechanically, something its successor improved upon brilliantly.
The controls’ precision, the abilities’ novelty, the combat mechanics, the movement, the environments’ detail, the HUB, the soundtrack… Ori and the Will of the Wisps screams its ambition from the very first second of gameplay, and it strives to deliver on its promise.
Although it sacrifices the first game’s natural feel, it does so to achieve much more fun and dynamism, with a quest and progression system that quickly makes its appearance, pointing you in the right direction and hooking you before you even realize it.
Perhaps I hold the franchise in lower regard than most, but even so, I can recognize a great game when I see one, and that’s Ori and the Will of the Wisps: one of the most comprehensively crafted experiences in the entire genre.
3 Соль и Святилище
Masochistic Entertainment

Imagine starting a video game that throws you onto a ship in the middle of a storm, where you fight an invincible Lovecraftian beast that tears you in two, and not thinking it’s among the best indie games of all time.
Salt and Sanctuary begins your ordeal with a magnificent opening sequence, giving you a small glimpse of the kind of horrors you’ll witness on your journey, but then it pulls back and takes you to the shores of a salty sea where the real adventure starts.
Different from previous entries on the list, this game doesn’t rush things. Instead, it uses that horrific introduction to make you crave calm, then grants it, making you comfortable with the idea of simply defeating undead enemies that barely put up a fight.
However, by the time you reach the first boss, Salt and Sanctuary raises the stakes again, pitting you against a fearsome warrior who is so fast and agile that you won’t have time to reconsider your life choices.
If there’s one thing this indie marvel knows how to do, it’s manage pacing perfectly. It would have been easier to start at zero and end at a hundred, though it chose to force you to endure highs and lows so you never know what’s around the next corner.
2 Девять Солов
A Flawless Combat System

If someone tells you there’s a Metroidvania that combines Hollow Knight Секиро: Тени дважды in a Taopunk setting, the last thing you’d do is hesitate to buy it, so passing up Девять солей is never an option.
Its intro is more deliberate and narrative-driven than what the genre usually offers, and it takes longer than normal to even start fighting, but the moment the game lets go and allows you to move freely… It’s a blessing for the senses.
With some of the most perfect combat and sound design in the last couple of years, the sensitivity of each hit and parry generates immeasurable satisfaction. It’s not just that it looks incredible thanks to the visual effects and magnificent choreography, but it also feels incredible.
If you don’t believe me, try the game, and after you’ve landed several consecutive parries on a robotic centaur ten times your size, come back and apologize for doubting the obvious statement about Девять солей being masterful.
Although it starts vigorously, the game ends even stronger, with increasingly complex bosses and a real ending that can frustrate even the most skilled speedrunners in the genre, so fun is more than guaranteed.
1 Полый рыцарь: Шелковая песнь
A Masterpiece From the Start

Большая проблема Hollow Knight detractors often mention is its slow start, and while I don’t agree, that’s not a complaint that can be made about Полый рыцарь: Шелковая песня.
When you wake up in Moss Grotto, the comparison is as inevitable as the conclusion: Hornet is faster, more agile, more capable, and has diagonal abilities, making even the platforming and swordplay feel exciting from the get-go.
After a first boss that properly teaches you how to control Hornet’s mechanics and revamped moveset, you emerge to experience a clear statement of intent from Team Cherry: plenty of space, life, characters, dialogue, quests, and adventures to undertake.
You don’t have to wander around or consult wikis, because Silksong knows perfectly well how to guide you along the paths it wants, even if it makes you feel like you’re being led by the hand in the most subtle and graceful way possible.
The seven years of development were not in vain, and both in the first hour and the fiftieth, I find it hard not to talk about the game as the best and most fun Metroidvania ever conceived, because no matter what is happening on screen, it is impossible not to be astonished by the magnitude of its greatness.
