Wipeout портируют на неожиданную платформу

Полное уничтожение is getting ported to the Dreamcast. The iconic PlayStation 1 racer was made to run on Sega’s ill-fated console roughly 30 years ing its original release.

In recent times, there has been an uptick in fan projects seeking to port a wide variety of games to the Dreamcast. One of the latest examples of this trend materialized in January 2025, when Russian developer Maximqad made some progress on getting Counter-Strike и Half-Life: Deathmatch to run on the Dreamcast using the Xash3D engine.

Another such project emerged in late March 2025, when modder Jnmartin84 shared an update on their efforts to get Полное уничтожение working on Sega’s 1999 console. The footage of their project shared by YouTube channel The Sega Guru (via Time Extension) shows one of the best PS1 racers running smoothly on the Dreamcast, often exceeding 100 frames per second.

Doom 64 Dreamcast Port Informed Jnmartin84’s Wipeout Project

Reflecting on their achievement, Jnmartin84 revealed that the project was largely informed by their previously finalized Dreamcast port of the Nintendo 64 exclusive Гибель 64. The older port saw the developer create some utilities for manipulating polygon headers and «fast math stuff,» which they have also utilized in getting Полное уничтожение to run on Sega’s classic console. The project itself is their second attempt at porting Полное уничтожение to the Dreamcast, ing a similar effort in 2023, which produced a game that worked but didn’t have sound and experienced some graphical glitches. The new port isn’t problem-free either; Jnmartin84 reports that the music stops working after racing a few tracks and that trying to quit to the main menu sometimes results in the whole game crashing.

The first working build of the port was successfully compiled on March 19, the developer recalled. Jnmartin84 did not elaborate on whether they intend to keep refining the game, or if this was a one-and-done attempt. One thing that possibly informed their porting efforts was the fact that the original Полное уничтожение‘s source code is readily available online, having been released by archival group Forest of Illusion back in mid-2022. For projects like this, having access to the original source code significantly improves one’s understanding of the game’s logic and simplifies tasks such as asset extraction and management.

Jnmartin84’s Dreamcast version of Полное уничтожение emerged online mere weeks after another fan started porting Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to Sega’s 1999 console. That particular project is currently being helmed by SKMP, the same developer that previously got GTA3 running on the Dreamcast.
