How to begin the Permanent Retirement quest

To begin the Permanent Retirement quest, you’ll need to first ensure that you have completed Whodunit? quest beforehand.

After that, you’ll then be able to speak to Ocheeva in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, located in Cheydinhal to learn about your next contract.

As she’ll explain, your goal in this penultimate quest is to find and kill Adamus Phillida and put him in — like the quest name says — permanent retirement.

To receive a bonus reward, you’ll need to loot his body for his finger afterwards and then place it in Adamus’ desk in the Imperial Legion Offices после его смерти.

Speak to any other member of the Brotherhood before leaving, but once you’re ready, make your way to Лейавин where you’ll be able to find Adamus bathing in the local pond.

Where to find Adamus Phillida

Like many NPCs, Adamus Phillida tends to move around based on the time of day. Generally, he can be found in Layawiin, but the exact location will differ based on the time.

The best time to assassinate him is during the day, sometime in the late afternoon or early evening as you’ll be able to find him taking a swim in the open without any armour protecting him.

Going in at this time, your objective marker should be green to showcase that he’s outside, so if you’re in Layawiin but the marker is still red, wait until sometime in the afternoon and he should be outside.

The specific area you’ll be heading to is in a small pond area surrounded by a few nearby houses, near the North East gate. He’ll be there with his personal bodyguard keeping watch, which is why a long-ranged attack with the Rose of Sithis from somewhere more discreet is the way to go.

You can speak to Adamus, but when getting the chance to select your dialogue it’s worth noting that two of the options will engage you into open combat — so best to select the ‘Ничего не говори‘ option instead so that you’re able to maintain stealth. Unless you’re up for a bit of fightin’ anyway.

With all that said, let’s delve into the method for assassinating him without being spotted.

How to kill Adamus Phillida and acquire his finger

Unlike some of the other quests, it seems like this one is best completed in the daytime.

To get a clean kill on Adamus, you’ll need to make sure you have the Rose of Sithis equipped as this will guarantee a one-shot kill.

As for where to take the shot, I sat between Weebam-Na and Dar Jee’s houses crouched with the Shadowhunt bow at the ready.

Remaining crouched and ensuring the eye is closed to confirm you’re in stealth, take a shot on Adamus which — thanks to the power of the Rose — will dispatch him in a single shot.

Your quest should update, and now you’re free to either loot his body for the Finger of Adamus Phillida — if you’re going for the bonus reward — or return to Ocheeva and report the good news.

For those who are going for the bonus, whilst you’re looting his body, be sure to check for the Imperial Watch Office Key since this will help you bypass a Very Hard lockpick minigame you’ll need in the following section.

One final note worth mentioning here though, is that whilst I remained hidden during the kill, Adamus’ bodyguard seemed to somehow show some form of retaliation if I approached him afterwards. However, instead of chasing me, he walked away and it was only if I entered a certain proximity from him that he would turn around and begin attacking.

I’m assuming this is a bug as none of the other guards in the area or at other cities ever reacted to me after this, plus I didn’t receive a bounty. Still, it’s something to be aware of, though my recommendation would be just to not approach the bodguard after eliminating Adamus.

Optional: Where to hide Adamus Phillida’s finger

To hide Adamus Phillida’s finger, you’ll need to go to the Тюрьма Имперского города расположение на карте.

Once there, look for the door to the Imperial Legion Offices

If you have the Imperial Watch Office Key you’ll be able to open the door easily. If not though, you’ll have a Very Hard lockpick minigame to complete, so make sure no one can see you before attempting this.

I went into the offices at just after 2am, and so had quick access to Adamus’ desk.

You’ll need to complete a lockpick minigame to open it, but once that’s done, use the ‘Search’ function prompted at the bottom of the screen to open up your inventory. From here, you can then select to ‘магазин‘ the Finger in the desk.

Your quest will update, confirming the completion of the bonus objective, and so you’re now free to return to Ocheeva in the Sanctuary — head back there to report all the good news.

How to complete the Permanent Retirement quest

After all your objectives are complete and you return to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, speak to Ocheeva to tell her about your success.

She’ll hand out the usual rewards, with a bonus provided to those who complete the optional objective of hiding Adamus Phillida’s finger in the Imperial Legion Office desk.

This time, the bonus reward is simply just an additional 500 Gold coins. Whilst not as flashy as a whole new piece of gear or stat boost, it’s certainly a handy reward which will no doubt be helpful.

It was also at this point I had my rank raised to Убийца, earning me the Assassin, Dark Brotherhood achievement.

With that quest out of the way, you’re now free to move onto the final quest, The Purification.
