At this year’s Summer Game Fest Play Days, Hardcore Gamer got the chance to play King of Meat, the debut title from new studio Glowmade that pits you and your friends against user-created dungeons full of puzzles and enemies. Equal parts Labyrinth и ВВЕ, the game’s unique style and diverse level creator make for a wild and unique new entry in the dungeon crawler genre.
A Deadly Pop-Medieval Game Show
Король мяса is not only the name of the video game, but also a game show within the universe of the game, the sole form of entertainment in a medieval-fantasy world that televises groups of warriors fighting their way through dungeons (created by other players in the level editor). It’s a bit like Супер Марио Maker отвечает Дьявол, with customizable RPG loadouts used by players in order to make it through the deadly and puzzling levels devised by other players online.
The hub world is a bazaar of sorts, with pubs and merchants, but also TV cameras and sound stages, serving as the locations to purchase new gear, upgrade your abilities and activate new quests. Characters hanging around the backlot are full of hilarious and unexpected lines that they’ll say as you pass by, as well as when you interact with them to pursue objectives. This area also serves as a way to meet other players, who you can then invite to a squad with a couple button presses if you like their style or loadout.
Characters wear basketball jerseys, shining armor and leather jackets, to name a few of the many different styles available to customize your character with, combining modern pop culture with a medieval fantasy setting for a unique take on the genre. Their weaponry skew more towards the medieval fantasy setting (although we have seen rubber duckies used as thrown artillery), with warhammers, swords, crossbows, shields and the like being used to take on rooms full of enemy skeletons, orcs and more. The move sets for these weapons are limited, but tight and responsive. Plus, they’re more than enough in combination with the numerous Glory Moves that the player can learn and equip as they progress up the ranks.
Fight Through Dungeons, Or Create Your Own
These special moves helped a ton in our co-op gameplay, helping clear out crowds of enemies with a knockback blast or healing squadmates within range. They have a long cooldown, so it’s important to think strategically when using them, as you never know when a trap or a massive wave of enemies can be activated as you move through the dungeon. We ended up dying several times during our few dungeon runs, laughing every time at the absurdity of a ragdolling cartoon character being launched into a lake of lava or crushed by a panel of spikes.
There are a seemingly-endless number of possibilities when it comes to choosing a level to enter, with the only limit being the creativity of other players. One map saw us trying to free our squadmate from the confines of a cage that popped up around him, which we solved by locking ourselves in cages as well, unlocking a path forward for everyone. Other levels spawn enemies upon activating seemingly-necessary levers and buttons, trapping us in a room against wave after wave of foes with a limited amount of healing items for us to survive with.

The main thing that made these levels so fun were the diverse possibilities that the level editor provides players, with the opportunity to create levels ranging from super-simple to devilishly complex thanks to the soft programming and logic mechanics in the game. We had the chance to mess around with the level editor, which is designed to be able to be used with a controller or mouse and keyboard, which was extremely easy to use and learn how to build with. We’re told that there are already hand-selected players that are working on creating maps for the game when it launches, which are sure to surpass the expectations of what was possible in the game.
We had a blast playing Король мяса at Summer Game Fest, which made strangers into newfound friends with its tight and creative co-op gameplay. The hilarious and zany world matches the light-hearted violence of the gameplay, making for a killer combo of comedy and chaos. Король мяса is a title for co-op fans to look forward to, and is set to release sometime in 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam and Nintendo Switch.
