How to unlock costumes in Mario Kart World
To unlock a costume in Mario Kart World, you first need to drive through a Dash Food bag. This item can be found in Grand Prix Races, Knockout Tours and Free Roam whether you’re playing alone or with friends. Thanks to the orange colouring and smiley face decoration, you’ll easily spot Dash Food bags during your races.
In Grand Prix Races and Knockout Tours, Dash Food can be found outside the Yoshi restaurants sitting alongside the tracks. Though you may find some placed in the middle of tracks in a similar manner to Item Blocks. Though you will unlock the transformation to use later, after each race, your outfit will return to the one you originally selected.
If you’re playing Free Roam, then you’ll still find yourself encountering the Yoshi restaurants and food trucks on the roadside. Every so often you’ll also encounter a lorry owned by the Yoshi restaurant empire and, if you drive up the ramp on its back, there will be a Dash Food bag awaiting you. Unlike the other modes, the outfit you’ve acquired will stay on your chosen character in Free Roam until you change it again.
How Dash Food bags work in Mario Kart World
Команда exact outfit your character transforms into is determined by the food they eat. You can tell what food a Yoshi restaurant is offering by looking at the signs outside, which can help you narrow down what outfits you’re missing for each character.
In Grand Prix Races and Knockout Tours, what determines the food on offer is the track you’re currently racing on. The Wario Stadium and Airship Fortress tracks, for example, both have curry rice food trucks which transformed our Peach into her Aviator costume.
In Free Roam mode, the region and which tracks you’re currently close to determine what kind of Yoshi restaurants you encounter. They do have fixed locations though, so, if you find one Yoshi burger joint as Mario, you can always return there again as another character.
Команда food received from the Dash Food bags atop the roaming lorries also mirrors the region you’re currently in. We got the Daisy Oasis costume from eating a curry naan in-between Desert Hills and Shy Guy Bazaar.
It’s important to note, however, that certain characters have fewer outfits compared to others. (Mario definitely has more than Birdo.) Creature NPC drivers also don’t have any outfits at all, so you’re not going to get a new look for Cow. We’ve got a list of every character in Mario Kart World if you’d like a quick rundown of who is considered a creature NPC racer.
Despite this, every character will benefit from the Dash Bags speed bonus! The power of the said speed bonus is decided by the portion size. Got a big burger? Then you’re going fast! Tiny sandwich? Not so much.
If you want to see how many costumes you’ve unlocked per character, then either check the character select screen where they’ll be listed after the default costume for every character or open up the ‘Map’ from the main menu. Here you’ll be able to look at the map for Free Roam and, by scrolling over a character, see how many costumes you’ve unlocked for them.
How to disable costume transformations in Mario Kart World
There is a way to disable costume transforms in Mario Kart World, though. This is useful if you want to benefit from the Dash Food speed bonus, but want to continue wearing your favourite costume.
You can access the game’s settings from the kart selection screen by pressing ‘X’. Once there, scroll down to the ‘Dash Food’ option. There you’ll be able to switch it to ‘Doesn’t transform’ to prevent any possible costume changing.
Best of luck unlocking every costume in Mario Kart World! We also have a guide on how to unlock all of the characters if you want to take a look.
