The various trappings of SpongeBob SquarePants have become hard-baked into our collective cultural consciousness.
Anyone within a certain age range either grew up watching the show or watches it now, and if you mention Bikini Bottom to a bunch of adults, a statistically significant portion of them will know what you’re talking about even if they’ve never watched the show.
It’s basically gotten to the point where you can slip a SpongeBob reference in anywhere, even in a skateboarding video game, and it won’t be out of place.
If you don’t believe me, just go looking for the secret Bikini Bottom area in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4. Originally teased with the game’s reveal trailer, there’s a teeny, tiny slab of Bikini Bottom hidden in one of the game’s tracks for you to find.
It’s literally the only SpongeBob reference in the entire game; SpongeBob himself isn’t a cameo skater, there’s no SpongeBob music in the library, just… a little slice of that cartoon ocean for funsies. Hey, who’s complaining?
Where To Find Bikini Bottom in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4

To find Bikini Bottom, you’ll need to visit the second competition park from the Pro Skater 3 selection, Skater Island. To unlock Skater Island, you’ll need to complete at least 24 skating goals across all previous levels in the Pro Skater 3 tour, as well as get at least one medal in the first competition park, Rio.
From the initial spawn point on Skater Island:
- Ride forward across the ramps until you come to a big door on your left.
- Exit out of the door, and you should see a large pirate ship floating in the water.
- Skate up the ramp onto the deck of the ship, then ride the ramp on the left of the deck to reach the second floor.
- Ride up and over the front ramp to reach the bow of the ship, then jump and grind onto the long pointy thing in the front (which I’ve just learned is apparently called the «bowsprit»).
- If you look out onto the water in front of the bowsprit, you should see a red life preserver floating next to a Bikini Bottom sign. You might need to get a little speed going, but if you can reach that life preserver, you’ll instantly find yourself in Bikini Bottom.
Unfortunately, this secret area is made up of just five ramps, and if you fly off the edge, you’ll be back in the regular map. Still, you can see SpongeBob’s neighborhood out in the distance, which is neat, as well as the Krusty Krab, which I’m pretty sure is supposed to be like a fifteen-minute walk from SpongeBob’s house, but whatever.
