Despite not being as big as some of the other major game publishers, Devolver Digital always manages to draw my attention when it announces games. I think that’s at least partially because the games it publishes are almost always… distinct, for lack of a better descriptor. Case in point, I’ve had Skate Story on my radar ever since it was announced back in 2022, despite knowing basically nothing about it, all because its trailer was rich in powerful vibes.
Skate Story was originally slated to release in 2023, but then it got delayed to 2024. And then it got delayed to 2025. Its development has become so nebulous, it’s started to become something of an in-joke in Devolver’s presentations. Finally, however, this has come to an end. In a new trailer posted on Devolver’s YouTube channel, the publisher confirmed it: Skate Story is finally coming out this year, on December 8th.
Skate Story is Coming to PC, PS5, and Switch 2
As the name implies, Skate Story is a story about skating, though that’s merely the tip of the iceberg. What I can piece together from the trailers is that you’re a demon in the underworld made entirely of glass who has taken up a skateboard in a quest to devour the moon.
Does that make sense? I don’t know! But it’s got vibes falling out of its ears, and something inside me needs to know where this is going. If that sounds a little too experimental to understand on its own, you may be interested to know that the game has also received its first playable demo, available via its Steam page, ahead of next week’s Steam Next Fest.
I put a few minutes into the demo already, and while it is definitely a strange game, the skateboarding systems are surprisingly in-depth and satisfying. I guess that explains why it took so long to make.
Skate Story will be available for digital download on December 8, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
