What do coins do in Mario Kart World?

Before we get into what coins actually do, it’s important to note that there are two types of coins in Mario Kart World — coins and Peach Medallions.

Coins are the traditional golden Mario-universe coin that we all know and love. These coins appear throughout every cup, rally and mode. Collecting them serves two primary purposes. Firstly, it will increase your overall speed in a race to a max of 20 coins. Just watch out from attacks like Red Shells from other racers as this will cause you to lose coins! Secondly, coins are used to unlock new karts.

Peach Medallions, on the other hand, are found exclusively in Free Roam mode. Scattered across the map, each Peach Medallion is a large yellow coin with a picture of Peach adorned upon it. (Hence the name.) Collecting a Peach Medallion often serves as a little challenge even after you’ve located one, because they’re often in hard-to-reach locations. They’re worth the trouble though as you’ll need to find a certain number of Peach Medallions to unlock Mirror Mode.

Coin farming tips in Mario Kart World

Free Roam mode is the best place to farm coins in Mario Kart World and we’ve got two recommended farming methods.

Первый — от finding coin piles. There’s a selection of coin pile sizes on offer; ranging from a couple of coins to piles towering high with multiple stacks of coins. The largest coin piles often are typically harder to find and harder to reach. Yet, they’re worth grabbing when you see them as they could be what unlocks your next kart. Make sure you take the time to examine your surroundings and I’m sure you’ll figure out how to reach them! (Even if it involves performing quite the perilous jump…)

Второй метод предполагает following an NPC car which either has three coins floating behind it or is spitting out coins. Through this method, you can consistently collect coins until the car despawns or you lose it on the road.

Personally, I prefer the cars with three floating coins since they’re easier to find. The best way to use this coin farming method is to start at a location containing a busy road, like in and around Crown City, or a junction like the one near Toad’s Factory. Now all you have to do is wait for the car to spawn. It shouldn’t take very long if you’re at a junction.

Once you see a car with three floating coins, carefully accelerate before breaking. You’ll then want to repeat this process over and over again. Since the coins almost instantly respawn, this should put you in a state of near constant coin collection. Just keep in mind that the NPC car itself might despawn and, if this happens, you’ll have to find another one. Yes, it will become tedious but if you want those coins fast, then this is the way to go!

I used the Baby Blooper kart when performing this farming method as the combination of its good handling and acceleration stats made it easy to collect the coins while following the NPC car’s movements. The lower speed stat also meant I never accidentally zoomed past the car I was following.

Best of luck collecting all of the coins!
