Sometimes, I miss the early 1990s like a physical ache. Life was simpler, my responsibilities amounted to actually eating my vegetables, and the SNES and Sega Genesis ruled supreme with the PlayStation about to arrive to boot.
It was a wonderful time for gaming, when millions were introduced to legendary mascots like Mario and Sonic. Some might say that ToeJam and Earl weren’t quite on that level, and they’re right, but this hilarious pair really left an impression on me. One of the greatest Genesis games ever, too.
When Men in Black landed in 1997, the rebellious attitude of the aliens in the kitchen gave me enormous ToeJam & Earl vibes. I had long since finished the game by then, but I instantly pictured ToeJam exclaiming “Jammin’” on the boxart, proceeding to grin about that for the rest of the movie.
I’m incredibly nostalgic for ToeJam and Earl, then, which isn’t one of the rarest Genesis titles ever but is a real blast. This is why I was delighted to learn that another new game in the series is on the way.
Earlier this month, as reported by PC Gamer, series creator Greg Johnson engaged in a Reddit Ask Me Anything to celebrate the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign for his new game, Dancing With Ghosts. Inevitably, the conversation turned to ToeJam & Earl, with one participant asking for more details about a potential new game.
The Coolest Aliens Ever Make Another Return
Subtle hints, of course, weren’t enough to sate the hunger of fans of this rapping, hotdog-eating, chain-wearing pair, but Johnson was happy to oblige (to a certain extent). He noted:
«I can say that the new game is in the planning stage. We intend to make it happen.»
Of course, optimism can be difficult to come by in the gaming industry at times, but I’m not going to dwell on the implications of “intend.” The word may not be doing all the heavy lifting, but simply used as a precaution.
Not everything makes it off the drawing board to a final release, and it’s clearly very early days, but there is a certain confidence there.
At any rate, Johnson stated that the new game would combine elements of the first two entries in the series and feature “design led by the infamous and talented producer of BitG, Nap.” Johnson seems to have faith that perhaps his most hilarious creation is in good hands, however long we may have to wait for the new game to make an appearance.
He also noted that it would “incorporate some of the design ideas of the original game 2 that never got made,” which is particularly interesting.
It could mean new mechanics, or simply characters or a means of attack beyond the iconic tomatoes. It means new ToeJam & Earl in some respect, though, which is good enough for me and lots of other fans. It’s been quite a long time, and the mentioned link to the original games is reassuring too. The first really is a retro couch co-op classic.
