Absolum has a lot of bosses for you to fight and conquer, but one of the toughest is The Underking. He’s big, he’s mean, he’s got a scythe that is somehow also a gun, and he’s going to try to bury you in his tomb of riches.

The Underking will be the first real challenge that most players have to overcome in their journey, and you’ll have to keep overcoming him every time you go on this journey. As the final boss of Grandery, he’s no slouch, and you’ll need to come prepared every time if you’re hoping to beat him.

This guide will cover the best path to reach him and some strategies to counteract his moveset. He might be big and slow, but he packs a punch, and one mistake could be the difference between moving to the next zone and returning to the start.

The Best Path to The Underking

While any path will do, as they’ll all eventually reach The Underking, there is a pathway that’s arguably better and will set you up for success against him better than others. There’s a secret passageway that contains an additional boss, the Mushtroll, who will give you an additional powerful upgrade for that run.

The Mushtroll isn’t difficult to fight, and you can reach it by going to the bottom of the first area you spawn into on your journey and breaking the rock that blocks the pathway. Once inside, you should be up against a few mushroom enemies and some dogs.

Killing the Mushtroll will reward you with an inspiration ability from your pool of those per character. Not only will this be a helpful boost for your fight against the Underking, but you’ll also get another inspiration from the next boss battle, which will be Gazorg, Son of Zorg.

Head toward the bottom direction after reaching the camp past the Mushtroll. This will be an easier way to go and will have plenty of opportunities for you to recover health at the waterfall. After beating Gazorg, you can head to the mists by jumping off the side instead of going over the bridge.

When you reach the end of the mists, you’ll find yourself able to purchase trinkets, and then you’ll arrive right at the entrance of the Underking. Now you’ve just got to defeat him, so you can reach Jaroba.

Beating The Underking

Fighting the Underking isn’t going to be a simple task. He’s got some big sweeping attacks that will keep you at range and a lot of ways to capitalize on that distance he creates.

He’s got two phases, and while not impossible, it will be difficult without some careful planning. One or two mistakes can ruin your run quickly and result in you going right back to the start.

In his first phase, he only has a couple of attacks he’ll use. Since it is a beat ’em up, you’ll need to stay in and play a bit riskily if you’re hoping to get through the phase quickly.

Below you’ll find a table with all of his phase one attacks and a video that should help you get an understanding of when to deflect and when to dodge.

After he screams and does the Fire Away attack, you’ll find yourself in the next phase of his fight. He usually does his Fire Away attack after reaching about half health.

This is where things get interesting, as now he’ll use all of his attacks, but a couple will get some upgrades, making them more difficult to deal with. Some attacks will get the red indicator, which means you can’t deflect them without getting stunned.

Below is the moves list with any changes that happen in the second phase.

His attacks hit pretty hard, so you’ll want to make sure you’re keeping your distance when necessary. He’s not great at closing that distance, but with all of his attacks being sweeping strikes, it can be difficult to get into range.

The Underking will be the first real challenge put in your way, but there are some good ways to beat him and get past him without taking too much damage. These tips and tricks should help you beat The Underking, but due to the nature of the game, there’s a lot that can change each run.

These aren’t perfect and may not help you during specific runs, but I’ll try to keep them general so they can be applied regardless of what sort of build you have.

• Aggressively Passive — You want to try to raise his pressure enough to overpower him. Don’t back out when you’re punching him until you absolutely have to.

The Underking Rewards

Unlike the other bosses, you won’t get any inspiration for defeating The Underking. Instead, you’ll receive a new ability to use in your alternate slot. This can be really helpful as it gives you an additional mana chunk on top of the extra ability.

The Underking is just one of the many bosses in this indie game, so gear up and get ready to face a lot more over and over again. Because of its roguelike nature, you’ll have to beat these bosses on each run you complete, so make sure you try out all sorts of things when you can.
